The Isle of Lewis is the largest island in the Western Isles/Outer Hebrides of Scotland. Separated from the Scottish mainland by a treacherous stretch of water, known as the Minch the islands, the islands are considered to be off the main tourist map of Scotland. However, in the last few decades there has been a marked increase in interest and a subsequent increase in tourism to this isolated region of the United Kingdom. Of course the airport just outside of Stornoway makes a huge difference to travel times and overall convenience as traveling by road and ferry can take some considerable time. However there really is something special in traveling to and from islands by ferry, it is certainly more romantic and the sight of the islands slowly coming into view is an experience to be enjoyed.
